Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto and the twin brother of Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. Revered as the god of music, prophecy, healing, the sun, and poetry, and he protected herds and crops from diseases and pests. Hermes offered Apollo his new invention, the lyre, as a peace offering, and he became a stringed instrument master. Apollo's nickname was Phoebus, meaning literally "bright."
